The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day, Albert Einstein.
Science is the body of knowledge that gives us an idea of how the world works. Science is made up of facts, theories, and methods. Facts are based on experiments and careful observations. Theories are explanations or models for understanding reality. They are open to debate and can be changed. Scientific knowledge is durable but tentative.
Science can be divided into:
Physical sciences study inanimate objects incapable of making conscious choices. They aim at finding immutable laws of nature. It encompasses a variety of fields that include Astronomy, Chemistry, Geology, Mineralogy, Meteorology, and Physics.
Life sciences are the study of living organisms, including microorganisms, plants, animals, and human beings, and how they interact with each other and their environment. They include Biology, Botany (plants), Zoology (animals), Entomology (insects), Virology (viruses), Ecology (how organisms interact with their environments), Genetics (genetic makeup of living organisms and heredity), and Medicine (human beings).
Formal sciences are disciplines concerned with formal systems, such as Logic, Mathematics, Statistics, Theoretical Computer Science, Information Theory, Game Theory, and Decision Theory. Logic is the study of correct reasoning, e.g., All men are mortal, Plato is a man (these are given statements accepted as true or evidence). Therefore, Plato is mortal. All p are q, r is p. Therefore, r is q.
Social sciences is the study of society and social behavior; where Physical sciences study inanimate objects incapable of making conscious choices, Social sciences study human subjects with a will and volition of their own. Social sciences include Anthropology, Archaeology, Economics, Geography, History, Law, Linguistics, Politics, Psychology, and Sociology.
